Besides Hon’ami Kōetsu, Tawaraya Sōtatsu is recognised as a predecessor of the Rimpa School. Since discovered by the former, Sōtatsu had collaborated with a number of contemporary cultural figures, painting grounds for the calligraphy scrolls of calligraphers such as Kōetsu and Karasumaru Mitsuhiro. Using bold, abstract composition and vibrant colours, Sōtatsu had established a highly decorative style that set the tone for the Rimpa painting, which later gave Ogata Kōrin great influences.
