Yokoyama Taikan is one of the most influential masters of the modern nihonga, the Japanese-style painting. Taikan had lived a life that reflects the modern Japanese art history. Predominantly influenced by the ideas of Ernest Fenollosa and Okakura Tenshin, Taikan played an active role as the core member in the Nihon bijutsu-in (the Japan Art Institute), the largest independent artists’ group, from the Meiji period to the postwar era. Under his influence, Nihon bijutsu-in has cultivated a great many talented artists to the present day.
