Shibunkaku will be participating in Art Basel Hong Kong 2023.
For our first time in the Galleries section this year, Shibunkaku will showcase the works of “Bokujin” (ink people), Morita Shiryu and Inoue Yuichi, who left their distinctive mark on modern art and irrevocably changed the landscape of Japanese postwar calligraphy. Titled “Japanese Postwar Calligraphy in Global Context,” the exhibition features avant-garde calligraphies from the 1950s to the 1980s, including Morita Shiryu’s “Sojō ni zasu (sitting on the chopping board)” and various archival materials such as the artists’ working scenes, magazines, and newspapers. The line-up presents the beauty and spirit of calligraphy that has influenced not only Japanese but also artists from around the world with a comprehensive perspective.
In addition, for the Kabinett section in the booth, we will focus on an exhibition of Suda Kokuta (1906-1990). Suda was an artist who pursued thorough formalism in postwar Japan. He worked closely with Hasegawa Saburo, Yoshihara Jiro, and Morita Shiryu from the 1940s onwards, and remained a unique painter who steadfastly pursued his own path while participating in the Contemporary Art Discussion Group (Gendai Bijutsu Kondankai). His work is currently being reevaluated. The exhibition will introduce his abstract works from the late 1940s to the 1970s, as well as calligraphy works from his later years, where he arrived after a lifetime of creative pursuits.
