Art Collaboration Kyoto 2024

  • Art Collaboration Kyoto 2024

Shibunkaku (Kyoto/Tokyo) and kurimanzutto (Mexico City/New York) come together in a dynamic collaboration that bridges Japanese modern and traditional art with contemporary works from the Global South. Shibunkaku presents a carefully curated selection of masterpieces by renowned Japanese artists such as Morita Shiryū, Hakuin Ekaku, and Shimamoto Shōzō, while kurimanzutto contributes works by globally recognized contemporary figures like Abraham Cruzvillegas, Gabriel Orozco, and Oscar Murillo.

This unique exhibition creates a rich dialogue across time and geography, where the spiritual depth and technical mastery of Japanese modern art are met with the bold, conceptual inquiries of contemporary creators. Both galleries explore how artists, through generations, respond to cultural exchanges, whether through the materiality of lacquer and ink or the abstraction found in modern oil paintings and cotton embroideries. This collaboration invites viewers to witness how artists, spanning epochs and continents, transmit knowledge, aesthetics, and craft, continually enriching one another’s practices.
