Shibunkaku is participating in Art Fair Tokyo 2022 with a selection of works by the calligrapher Morita Shiryū.
In the 1950s, a new avant-garde movement sought to revive the traditional art of calligraphy, resonating strongly with Abstract Expressionism and positioning itself at the crossroads of Eastern and Western artistic exchange. A leading figure in this movement was Morita Shiryū, who introduced East Asian sho (calligraphy) to the world as an equal genre among the fine arts.
We are pleased to show Morita Shiryū at this fair, focusing on a range of his works from the 1960s, when he was actively engaged in his international activities, to the calligraphy of his later years.
