Shibunkaku Ginza has started “Ginza Curator’s Room” from last August, an exhibition series centering on curators. This program welcomes different curators each time who will create “rooms” that introduce new perspectives and modes of seeing, reflecting their unique points of view.
“Ginza Curator’s Room #002 Jun’ichiro ISHII” is delighted to present “8mm AWAY FROM KYOTO”, a project that artist duo K-NARF & SHOKO have been working on since 2020. Back in 2016 at an old camera shop in Kyoto, the pair happened upon a cache of 8mm home movie footage of several families, shot in the 1960s and early ’70s. These ordinary, everyday scenes of now unknown families have a whiff of nostalgia about them, yet at the same time depict a nameless “sometime.” K-NARF & SHOKO have taken these images, and using their original bricolage technique of “TAPE-O-GRAPHY,” given them new life as works of art for today’s world. The duo’s gaze into the past in turn invites our imaginations on a journey beyond the quotidian everyday.
