We are proud to present an early masterpiece by Morita Shiryū, co-founder of the avant-garde calligraphy group Bokujinkai. For Sō (deep blue, 1954), Morita envisioned a quality of overflowing life represented by the character. An overwhelming presence of black ink obliterates any discernible brushstrokes yet inside this whirlpool of flowing liquid remains a vivid impression of the artist’s smooth coordination of brush, hand and the movement of his entire body.
